The Elder Project

In 2016 we were planning our first retreat to Costa Rica. Our friend Sharon Elder asked if we were doing any community service during our stay in Costa Rica? At that point we hadn’t planned anything and thought why not? Sharon’s question was the spark to us creating the Elder project. Each year when we plan a retreat we like to focus on giving something back to the community that welcomes us and hosts us. Our first year we donated schools supplies and painted the entire interior of the local grammar school. The second year we brought enough school supplies to last them four years and painted the exterior of the school. This Seva or kindness was can spread quickly. The resort we stayed at noticed and appreciated our gesture of kindness and donated new air conditioners to the school. Our third year we followed the connection of one of our retreaters. We visited the village her parents were from in the Azores. The funds we donated were enough for the local village to decorate the small church. Floral arrangements all though out the church just in time for the annual Festa do Senhor Santo Cristo. Sharon’s thought-fullness and generosity will continue to stay with us each and every trip we make.

Thank you so much Sharon!
